What is a damselfly?
They are brightly coloured insects. You can often spot clouds of them flitting over the water surface. Food sources includes: mosquitoes, midges and larger insects.
The Grantham canal provides an excellent breeding and hunting grounds for damselflies. The River and Canals trust’s maintenance programme improves the canal banks with damselflies in mind.

Did you know that along the Grantham canal, there are 17 different species of dragon and damselflies which breed there. This one shown in the picture is called a migrant hawker.
The Belvoir Challenge includes stretches along the Grantham canal, you should be able to spot plenty at this time of year.
